Phthalate Compounds

Phthalates are chemical compounds added to plastics to increase flexibility, transparency, and longevity. Some scientific researches suggest that exposure to phthalates might interfere with the human’s endocrine system, and could lead to various health issues like metabolic disorders.
Children are the group most susceptible to phthalate exposure, e.g. exposure from toys. Therefore, the maximum levels of phthalates are regulated for public safety, as in the European regulation Commission Regulation (EC) No 552/2009 or the regulation in the CPSC-CH-C1001-09.4 2018 which limits the presence of phthalates in toys not more than 0.1{fb5829f531bbe8a03505a61f24562bab2c90d6fe84e51abcf3fb366c55bba585}
How SIG Can Help
SIG laboratory provides testing services for several phthalate compounds in toy products according to the CPSC-CH-C1001-09.3 standard method.
The type of phthalate compounds that can be tested in SIG laboratory are:
- Benzyl Butyl Phthalate (BBP)
- Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)
- Diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP)
- Di-Isodecyl Phthalate (DIDP)
- Di-Isononyl Phthalate (DINP)
- Di-N-Octyl Phthalate (DNOP)
Method of Analysis
CPSC-CH-C1001-09.3 is standard operating procedure for determination of phthalates, using Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS).
