Phthalate Compounds

Phthalates are a group of ester compounds of phthalic acid which are used as plasticizers. In the textile industry, phthalate compounds are usually used for the manufacture of motifs, plastisol prints, coated fabrics, buttons, etc. These compounds have the potential to disrupt the endocrine (hormonal) and reproductive systems. In large doses, phthalates can cause liver, kidney, lung, and testicular damage in animal studies. Therefore, the maximum level of phthalate is regulated in government regulations for public safety.

In Indonesia, the limit of phthalate compounds in textiles is regulated in Peraturan Menteri Perdagangan No. 18-2019. Only 3 types are regulated in these regulations, namely Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) with the maximum permissible content and reported 0.1{fb5829f531bbe8a03505a61f24562bab2c90d6fe84e51abcf3fb366c55bba585} as total phthalates

How SIG can help

SIG Laboratory can help you in performs analysis of several phthalates compound that is regulated by government regulations for textile samples especially in printed and coated textiles

The type of phthalate compounds that can be tested in the SIG laboratory are:

  • Benzyl Butyl Phthalate
  • Bis-(2-Ethylexyl) Pthalate
  • Dibutyl Phthalate
  • Di-Isodecyl Phthalate
  • Di-Isononyl Phthalate
  • Di-N-Octyl Phthalate

Method of Analysis

SIG Laboratory offers a GC-MS method for determining levels of phthalate compounds in textile samples.
