Heavy Metal Migration
Description
Migration is the process of transferring substances from food contact materials (FCMs) into food. The migration of heavy metal from FCMs is one type of FCMs migration. Heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) are commonly found in various plastic packaging at low concentrations. This is due to the contamination of raw materials, printing, and recycling.
Heavy metal migration in food packaging materials is a serious concern because it affects food quality and affects consumer health, so reliable quantification of metal elements in food contact materials is very important to ensure the safety of these products and can cause various health problems if exposed to high enough levels In Indonesia total amount of heavy metals migration (Pb, Cd, Hg, dan Cr6+) in plastic packaging is regulated at PerBPOM No. 20 of 2019 and should not exceed 1 mg/kg or 1 mg/L.
How can SIG help?
SIG Laboratory is an accredited laboratory according to ISO 17025. We can perform heavy metal migration (Pb, Cd, Hg and Cr6+) testing based on SNI 7741:2013 and regulation of PerBPOM No.20 in 2019
Method of Analysis
We use the ICP-MS method to measure the levels of heavy metals migration lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), specifically for hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) we offer a test using a spectrophotometer.
