Sugar is the generic name for several sweet-tasting carbohydrates found in food. Sugar has calories, while sweeteners may or may not have calories. Sweeteners are food additives that provide a sweet taste like sugar while containing significantly less food energy. Some sweeteners are produced naturally, and others produced synthetically. Many common artificial sweeteners are several hundred times sweeter than sugar. Naturally occurring sweeteners include stevia and sugar alcohols.
How SIG can help
SIG Laboratory can perform sugar & sweetener analysis on a wide variety of matrices, such as drinks, processed food, ready-to-eat products, and so on. Our tests in SIG Lab also ascertain whether the sugar & sweetener are at the appropriate levels, as specified by national and international regulations such as Per-BPOM Number 11/2019.
The types of sugar & sweeteners that can be tested in the SIG laboratory are:
Sugar
- Glucose
- Fructose
- Lactose
- Maltose
- D-Ribose
- Xylose
- Dextrose
Sweeteners
- Xylitol
- Sorbitol
- Neotame
- Saccharin
- Inositol
- Maltitol
- Mannitol
- Aspartame
- Sucralose
- Acesulfame K
- Cyclamic acid
- Steviol glycosides
- Sodium cyclamate
Method of Analysis
HPLC is the most likely technique to be used with many detectors, such as refractive index.
